☆ Burberry’s profit slumps by a third as sales in China plunge

London — British luxury brand Burberry has reported a 34% drop in annual profit after sales fell sharply in China — its biggest market — in the final three months of last year. The company had previously warned that achieving its goal of taking the 168-year-old brand further upmarket, to become the definition of “Modern British Luxury,” had been harder than expected after demand for luxury had slowed. Sales fell 12% in the final quarter, dragged down by a 19% slump in China, and wiping out gains made earlier in the year, Burberry said Wednesday. Sales in London, its home market, declined 17%, which Chief Executive Jonathan Akeroyd blamed on a lack of tax-free shopping for tourists. The world’s largest luxury group, Louis Vuitton owner LVMH, also reported weak sales in its latest quarter as spending on luxury items slowed.

“Purlie” and “The Wiz” — along with “Dreamgirls,” which landed just past the decade divider in 1981 — have been well attended since the 1970s. “The Wiz” was made into a film that many Black people regard as iconic, and a revival is playing on Broadway now. It ran for over two years, won the Tony for best musical and best actress (Virginia Capers) and Theatre World awards for three other leads. Musical theater historians tend to blow by it with a couple of respectful sentences. It’s had a regional revival or three, but compared with “Purlie,” “The Wiz” and “Dreamgirls,” it is a dead property.

Like-for-like retail sales in the quarter to end-September grew a dismal 1% at the UK maker of fancy trench coats, below analyst expectations of 4%. Aug 2 (Reuters) - American hammer thrower Gwendolyn Berry, a two-time Olympian and a Pan Am Games gold medallist, has been given a 16-month suspension after testing positive for a banned substance, the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) said on Wednesday. It is the second doping ban within a 10-year period for Berry, who was a member of the 2016 and 2020 U.S. Olympic teams. Berry’s violation resulted from her use of a topical medication containing the diuretic and masking agent spironolactone for which she had a prescription. However, Berry failed to obtain a Therapeutic Use Exemption for the medication. Berry's 16-month ban was backdated to April 28, the date her provisional suspension was imposed, ruling her out of this month's world athletics championships in Budapest.

The master recordings of the Voyager Golden Record still have their original boxes. Courtesy Sotheby'sNow, a copy of the master recording for NASA’s Voyager Golden Record — the one kept by the late astronomer Carl Sagan and his wife, producer Ann Druyan — will be for sale at Sotheby’s New York on Thursday. Both Voyager spacecraft carry a copy of the Golden Record. Each record cover was etched with symbols depicting how to locate the sun and instructions on how to play the record.
